SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION

TRACE

Traffic & Criminal Enforcement (TRACE) Team. In addition to traffic enforcement, the unit investigates a variety of criminal cases, including property crimes, residential breaking and entering and larcenies. TRACE Detectives are highly skilled in targeting the movement of illegal drugs, stolen property, and other criminal activity moving in and through Davidson County.

ANIMAL CONTROL UNIT

The Animal Control division is responsible for enforcing animal-related laws, protecting public health and safety, and promoting animal welfare. Their primary duties range from rescuing stray pets and investigating cruelty to managing dangerous animals and responding to emergencies.

WARRANT SQUAD

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office Warrant Squad is a specialized division responsible for tracking, apprehending, and processing individuals with active arrest warrants. These deputies handle both day-to-day criminal processes and high-risk operations to ensure wanted subjects are brought before the judicial system.

COMMUNICATIONS DIVISION

The Sheriff's Office Telecommunicators serve as the vital communications link between the public, the 911 center, and deputies.  They are responsible for answering non-emergency calls, operating complex communications equipment, and providing crucial information to units responding to calls as well as units on scenes investigating.

K9 DIVISION

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit utilized highly trained dogs to assist deputies in law enforcement operations, primarily focusing on suspect apprehension, tracking, narcotis detection, explosive detection, and evidence recovery. 

SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS

Captain Jay Hull is the Commander for the Special Investigations Division for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.  Captain Hull started his career at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in 2001. Captain Hull started his career as a Detention Officer in the Davidson County Jail prior to his assignment with the Patrol Division in 2002. Captain Hull has worked as a Patrol Deputy, Detective on the Breaking and Entering Task Force, Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Captain for the Jail and Captain for the Patrol Division. In December of 2025, Captain Hull assumed command of the Special Investigations Division for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office.  The Special Investigations Division consists of the Traffic and Criminal Enforcement Division (TRACE), Warrant Squad, Animal Control Unit, Communications Division and the K9-Squad.  Prior to starting at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, Captain Hull served in the United States Army for three years in the Military Police Division.  Hull has received the Advanced Service Award from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Medal of Valor in December 2022.
